Let’s go chasing color! For July’s GMD Los Angeles Tour, we’re heading to visit David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-Life at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

4:00-4:30 pm Meet ’n Greet
We’ll meet in front of LACMA’s iconic Urban Lights – the side by Ray’s and Stark Bar. Find GMD’s founder Diane Lindquist waiting to meet y'all. There you will briefly introduce yourself, describe what you are passionate about, and your current art obsession. You will also meet our special guest before we proceed inside the museum.
5:00 – 5:50 pm Exhibition Exploration
We will first visit head to see David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life. In 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, David Hockney offers a vibrant and intimate view of people with whom he has developed relationships over the past 50 years. The majority of the portraits were painted in Hockney’s Los Angeles studio, all from life and over a period of two or three days, which the artist has described as “a 20-hour exposure.” None of Hockney’s portraits are commissioned; for this series, he invited family, members of his staff, and close friends to sit for him—including several curators, art dealers, and collectors with local and international renown.
Next, we will visit the newly open 3D: Double Vision. The quest for perfect 3D representation drives innovation, stimulates creative expression, and sparks wonder in a generation after generation. 3D: Double Vision is the first American exhibition to survey a full range of artworks, dating from 1838 to the present, that produce the illusion of three dimensions. These artworks function by activating binocular vision—the process by which our brains synthesize the information received by our two eyes into a single, volumetric image.
Lastly, check out John Gerrard: Solar Reserve. A recent addition to LACMA’s collection, John Gerrard’s public installation Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada) 2014 is a digital simulation, displayed on a large-scale LED wall, that recreates a Nevada solar thermal power plant and the surrounding desert landscape. At the center of this virtual world is a tower encircled by 10,000 mirrors that adjust their positions according to the location of the sun in order to reflect light on the tower to generate electricity.
